Partnership Blooms as Renovation Project Ends:
Local Architect O'Connell Robertson & Associates
Helps Larkspur Elementary School Plant Seeds of Learning through
Revitalized Courtyard
November 4, 2003
SAN ANTONIO
- While most Larkspur Elementary students in the North East ISD
had the day off on Monday, October 13, some were digging in, to
help complete a courtyard beautification project at the school -
one of the final components of the Larkspur 1998 bond renovation
project.
Project
architect O'Connell Robertson & Associates organized the event,
working in partnership with Larkspur staff, PTA members and other
local businesses. The school's 1998, $2.8 million bond project involved
a 50,000 SF renovation of the school including a major kitchen/cafeteria
expansion; new covered entry; and mechanical, electrical and plumbing
upgrades. The idea to improve the courtyard was a campus "wish
list" item the design team worked hard to make a reality while
meeting the specific district requirements for the renovation.
"The O'Connell
Robertson architectural team has been instrumental throughout the
planning, implementation, and completion phases of the Larkspur
construction project," said Principal Dolores Ramon. "Their
commitment to excellence led to more than just an ordinary working
relationship. They became members of the Larkspur family, with a
deep commitment to our students and the community."
The
improved courtyard creates a peaceful, outdoor learning space with
new pavers, picnic tables, and planters. The "beautification
day" in October involved enriching the existing soil in the
planters and adding hearty Texas Native plants which will be evergreen
all year and flower seasonally, adding color and life to the courtyard.
Even a much-loved Spanish Oak tree was preserved, defining the space
and character of the courtyard. Nearly 15 school staff, PTA members
and students showed up to help with the planting, including Principal
Dolores Ramon and Assistant Principal Steve McCarthy. "Because
they believe in taking a project to full completion, it was not
enough to design a courtyard, they were determined to have it landscaped
as well," said Ramon. O'Connell Robertson donated more than
$500 in materials and plants to complete the courtyard and the firm's
staff members participated in the planting project. Local business
Starlight Gardens also participated in the project, serving as a
resource in plant selection and providing a discount on plants.
"It's rewarding
to see the excitement and sense of pride in the school staff and
the children as they speak about the improvements made to their
school. I've enjoyed the interaction with the school staff, who
greatly contributed to the project's success with their positive
attitude, tremendous patience, and great cooperation throughout
the construction progress," said O'Connell Robertson design
team member Elizabeth Fair.
